hen she was 18 she took a summer job in a small firm that handles things for the rich and famous, so they don't have to. "The rich don't drive their own cars, hire their own help, or buy their own houses. We're lucky they'll deign to wipe their own asses." Marco grew up poor and grew up tough. She has no siblings, and hence no brothers to help protect her. She's smart, but she did not go to college and did not have good prospects for jobs. She was very lucky to land this one. Marco's been poor and has no intention of ever being there again.
Marco is not a bad person, but years of exposure to this job have hardened her in many ways. She's able to compartmentalize well and do the things that need to be done, even when other people would question the morality of those decision. Work is work. This attitude is partly due to her past, and knowing she has to do what she has to do to take care of herself.
She snuck in to the company one night to get something she'd forgotten at work. And she saw something. A vampire there, talking to her boss. A dead person on the floor. They spotted her and she was able to talk herself out of being killed by the vampire, by solving the problem they were facing. The vampire raises an eyebrow, her boss says he'll handle it with her. And that's how she got into the company.
A few years later, he retired. Left the company to her. She's been running it for 6 years and has done some things he told her not to do, like expand with the limousine service. Her hubris at running this company herself and making changes is what's got her in a mess now, she's broken some basic rules and they're biting her in the ass.
